First the good stuff: Extensive bio- and commercial- synthesis pathways ARE given for the compounds discussed. A very broad interpretation of "the chemical industry" is also nice: Everything from dyes to drugs to fertilizers are covered. The content, however, is poor. The voice differs wildly from section to section, there are numerous uncited assertions and offtopic diversions, and the treatment of different classes of chemicals varies widely. Consider there is no discussion at all about the extraction of Beta-Lactam antibiotics from their natural sources, but the book goes into deep demotic detail on the production of morphine. This is a big book, and obviously a lot of people contributed to it, but it needs a major "consolidation and consistency" editing pass before release as a > $100 book. Shame on Springer, who is usually more careful than this.
